Investigations

Criminal Investigator (Special Agent)

Criminal investigators plan and conduct investigations, often undercover, concerning possible violations of criminal and administrative provisions of the Immigration and Nationality Act and other statutes under the United States Code.

These officers carry firearms, make arrests, prepare investigative reports, present cases to the U.S. Attorneys for prosecution and give testimony in judicial and administrative proceedings. They work closely with federal, state and local agencies. Criminal investigators are located throughout the United States, including Guam, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Most positions are located in metropolitan areas, which have large offices.

Individuals may be hired at the GS-5 level with progression to the GS-13 level after successful completion of the preceding grade(s). Competition is required to move to higher grade levels. In accordance with Public Law 100-238, this position is covered under law enforcement retirement provisions; therefore, candidates must be appointed before reaching their 37th birthday unless they presently serve or have previously served in a federal civilian law enforcement position.
