NEW INFLUENZA PAGE
A new page on Influenza has just been added
to the Emerging Health Concerns section of PDHealth.mil. This page contains
applicable policies and directives of the military services; clinical guidance; fact
sheets; education and training materials; information on research; and related
links to other web sites.
LEISHMANIASIS UPDATE
New Army
Cutaneous Leishmaniasis Policy has just been published. The policy, entitled
"Guidance for the Management of Suspected Cutaneous Leishmaniasis in Operation
Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom" and dated 10 September 2004,
provides clinical policy guidance for the diagnosis, treatment and reporting of
cases of cutaneous leishmaniasis. It also includes the requirement for training
primary care providers and establishes Regional Medical Command Points of
Contact.
Leishmaniasis
Briefing, Leishmaniasis Working Group is a slide presentation developed
in July 2004 to provide education and guidance on the medical management of
cutaneous leishmaniasis in OIF and OEF soldiers. The Leishmaniasis Clinical Policy
Working Group was assembled by the Army to assist in the development of policy
for the management of leishmaniasis.
Leishmaniasis Diagnostic Scraping
Video is a 2½ minute video which demonstrates how to prepare tissue smears
for leishmaniasis diagnosis. It was made by the Dermatology Consultant to the
Army Surgeon General.

OPERATIONAL STRESS NEWS
A message Addressing Mental Health Concerns of Service Members
was issued by the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs. In it, he
discusses an Army study of mental health concerns and the mental health services
for troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, which was recently published in the New England
Journal of Medicine, and states that "the Military Health System is committed to
doing everything possible to help our service members remain healthy, including
providing access to high-quality mental health services".
