FPS security and law enforcement careers include positions as criminal investigators, inspectors, police officers and supervisory roles.

FPS Police Officer (GS-5 - GS-8)

FPS police officers perform the following duties as uniformed, armed law enforcement officers:

  • Provide crime response and make arrests.
  • Conduct preliminary criminal investigations, protect life and property on federally-controlled property and capture and detain suspects.
  • Respond to counter-terrorist operations, demonstrations, threats or natural disasters.

FPS police officers may patrol areas on foot, by automobile, motorcycle or bicycle. Officers also apprehend wanted persons on federal property; work with other law enforcement agencies to provide special protection during federal court trials; process criminal arrests by FPS; and present educational programs on workplace violence and crime prevention to customers.

Criminal Investigator (GS-5 - GS-12)

FPS criminal investigators serve in plainclothes, as armed Special Agents. They investigate felonies, make arrests, gather criminal intelligence, perform criminal and non-criminal investigations and network with other federal, state and local law enforcement agencies. In addition to these duties, criminal investigators analyze criminal statistics and recommend action; search crime scenes; collect and preserve evidence; participate in Federal Task Forces; conduct surveillance and interviews; present investigative results to U.S. Attorneys; testify at grand juries, courts and administrative hearings; and gather and evaluate threat assessment data.

NOTE:Positions subject to the special retirement provisions for law enforcement officers.

Inspector (GS-5 - GS-12)

Inspectors perform as uniformed, armed law enforcement officers that respond to crimes and make arrests; conduct Building Security Assessments; and develop action plans to reduce vulnerabilities. Inspectors are responsible for determining security systems or services for client agencies; promoting positive working relationships serving as a liaison with top management officials; and serving as a Contracting Officer Representative, ensuring contract compliance.
