Technology Development

Technology Roles and Relationships
The Federal Lands Highway promotes development of applied research and technology applicable to transportation serving Federal lands. It provides technology delivery and related information and knowledge sharing to Federal agencies, Tribal governments, and the FHWA resource centers to provide innovations and best practices.

The Federal Lands Highway Core Business Unit (CBU) coordinates the Technology Program between the three Federal Lands Highway Divisions, the other CBUs, and the Research, Development and Technology Service Business Unit. This provides a unified and coordinated program with the Federal-aid program, including participation of the Federal Lands Highway organization in the Technology Program by suggesting study areas, membership on technical panels, and support for program areas important to the Federal Lands Highway Program. The Federal Lands Highway Technology Deployment Program will be an important resource for the evaluating and showcasing of new technology and for implementing research findings.

The three Federal Lands Highway Divisions commit resources in their annual element of the business plan to participate in the development of the Federal Highway Administration's Research Program as appropriate for areas important to the Federal Lands Highway Program. The Divisions participate in various forums to share, guide, develop, and implement technology. The Federal Lands Highway staff will report on and showcase appropriate activities and products to interested parties within and outside of the Federal Lands Highway organization.

Technology Deployment
The Federal Lands Highway Technology Deployment Program addresses three categories of deployment because generally products are discovered at different levels of readiness.

  1. Essentially complete, products available for widespread use, and can be deployed with minimal training or evaluation.
  2. Partially complete, products require test and evaluation with relatively significant training prior to general acceptance and use.
  3. Incomplete, products in need of continued research or must be integrated with other ongoing research prior to use.

Vision
To make the Federal Lands Highway Technology Program a premier national and international model for implementing sound and beneficial technology.

Goal
To make the Federal Lands Highway program a center for technical expertise and a show place for evaluating, developing, and implementing leading edge technology.
