Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Navy

Patricia C. Adams

Ms. Patricia C. Adams became the Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Civilian Human Resources on June 9, 2003. As the Deputy Assistant Secretary, she serves as Director of Human Resources for Department of the Navy and senior advisor to the Under Secretary of the Navy and the Assistant Secretary of the Navy (Manpower and Reserve Affairs) on policies and programs impacting the civilian workforce.

Ms. Adams retired from Marriott International recently after a 25-year career. She was Vice President for Human Resources for the Residence Inn by Marriott Lodging Division. Her accomplishments with Marriott include assisting in the reengineering of the Marriott Corporate Lodging Organization into a centralized business unit. This reorganization enabled a customer focused strategic direction for the company. She also directed the design of hiring profiles for executive and management positions which included the identification of core competencies for these positions. She directed projects involving organizational design and interventions, training and assessment, and manpower planning. She began her career with Marriott in the hospitality management area, and held positions in the Lodging Division, as well as in the Corporate Training Division providing customized training and development activities throughout the corporation. Following her retirement in 2001 as a Human Resources Executive from Marriott, Ms. Adams served as an independent consultant focusing on executive coaching, career transition and human resource consulting.

She is a National Certified Counselor specializing in the area of career transitions and the implications of career transitions for job and life planning. She has served on the Board of Directors for Junior Achievement of the National Capital area assisting with strategic planning, and also on the Board of the Marriott Federal Credit Union. Ms. Adams is a member of the Society for Human Resource Management, Human Resource Planning Society, Human Resource Leadership Forum, Maryland Association for Counseling and Development, American Counseling Association, and the Washington Board of Trade. Ms. Adams earned her Masters of Science degree in Counseling from Loyola College in Maryland and her Bachelor of Science in Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management from Michigan State University.
