National Council On The Arts Convenes for 151st Meeting

Washington, D.C. -- The National Council on the Arts, the advisory body of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), will meet in a public session on Wednesday, March 31 in Room M-09 of The Nancy Hanks Center, 1100 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W., Washington, D.C.
On the agenda is the swearing-in of new Council member James McBride by Alberto Gonzales, Counsel to President Bush, an award presentation to 2004 NEA Jazz Master Herbie Hancock, and a presentation on the Mayors' Institute on City Design with guests the Honorable Joe Riley, Mayor of Charleston, South Carolina and Julie Bargmann, a landscape architect from Charlottesville, Virginia. The Mayors' Institute on City Design is an urban planning initiative that brings together design professionals and civic leaders to create better-built environments for our nation's cities.
Also on the agenda is an update on the NEA Jazz Masters program. On January 23 as part of the International Association for Jazz Education annual conference in New York City, the NEA gathered 26 of its Jazz Masters for several events to celebrate the expansion of the Jazz Masters program. Video from the evening's award concert that honored those assembled artists and featured performances from 28 musicians will be part of the update. As Mr. Hancock was not able to attend those events, he will receive his award from Chairman Dana Gioia at the meeting.
