The Office
of Investigations (OI) conducts
investigations throughout the United States in response to complaints
or allegations regarding violations of Federal law. Special
agents identify and investigate cases of waste, fraud and abuse
in agency programs and operations, and refer cases for prosecution
and monetary recovery action. In Fiscal Year 2004, OI
is staffed with 17 special agents and five support staff.
Typical cases fall within the following categories:
- false reporting by railroad employers,
- theft and fraudulent cashing of U.S. Treasury checks or conversion
of U.S. Treasury electronic fund transfers by someone other than
an authorized RRB annuitant,
- railroad employees claiming and receiving unemployment or sickness
insurance benefits while working and receiving wages from an employer,
and
- individuals receiving disability benefits and earning in excess
of the allowed amount
OI
maintains two field offices, one in the agency's headquarters
in Chicago, IL and one in Philadelphia, PA. Investigations
in sixteen eastern states as well
as the District of Columbia are conducted by agents located
in Philadelphia. Cases in the remaining states are handled
by the Chicago field office. |
