Student Visa (F or M)

Versión en español

Applicants for Student Visa need to obtain an appointment by calling the Visa Information Call Center. Applicants must show Form I-20 at the Embassy entrance and present the following during the interview:

Documents required for application

Student Visa applicants must present:

  • All the documents required for a Tourist Visa,
  • Form I-20A (complete the required pages) or I-20M, issued by the educational institution,
  • Form DS-158,
  • Personal financial information (or parents' information if dependent on them), which shows sufficient current liquidity to pay for one year of studies,
  • Evidence of medical insurance valid in the United States.

If the applicant has been denied a Student Visa, he/she must wait at least six months before requesting another appointment.

What if I want to stay longer than the time initially authorized by the Department of Homeland Security?

What if I have already had a student visa? Do I have to go through the whole application process again?

Under U.S. law, Student Visas may not be issued for study in
U.S. public elementary schools or public adult education centers.

Student Visas may be issued for a maximum of 12 months
to students attending public high schools (grades 9-12),
but only if the student presents proof to the consular officer
that the entire tuition has been paid to the school
in an amount which equals the total, current, unsubsidized cost
of educating a child in that school district.

There are no legal restrictions on the issuance of Student Visas
to persons who will be attending private schools,
and who have paid the applicable tuition,
or to those in exchange programs (J-1 visa).

Student Visas may be issued to persons
who have been accepted at public universities.
