Fire Prevention And Safety Grants And Supplemental Assistance To Firefighter FY03 Grants Announced By Homeland Security

34 Fire Departments and Organizations Receive Over $4.5 Million in Fire Prevention and Safety Grants and Supplemental Assistance to Firefighters Grants from the Fiscal Year 2003 Program

WASHINGTON, DC - Michael D. Brown, Under Secretary of Homeland Security for Emergency Preparedness and Response, announced the distribution of over $4.5 million from the FY03 Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program. Twenty seven fire departments and organizations will receive over $2.8 million from the FY03 Fire Prevention and Safety grant program, and another 17 fire departments will receive over $1.7 million from the fiscal year 2003 Assistance to Firefighter Grant (AFG) Program. The Fire Prevention and Safety aspect of the AFG program reserves the highest priority for projects focusing on the prevention of fire-related injuries to children. Many of these awards represent innovative solutions for the delivery of fire prevention activities throughout the United States.

"These awards are very timely, and continue our steadfast commitment to assist America's firefighters," said Brown. "President Bush, Secretary Ridge and I want to make sure that all of our communities are safe, and our first responders will have the necessary tools and equipment to do their jobs."

The Fire Prevention and Safety program is the non-competitive portion of the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program. The grants are made available to fire departments and other organizations, especially national, state, local, and community organizations that are recognized specifically for their experience and expertise in fire prevention or safety programs and activities.

The fiscal year 2003 AFG program was administered by the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), part of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and assisted rural, urban and suburban fire departments throughout the United States. On June 4, 2004, Homeland Security's Office of Domestic Preparedness began distributing funds for the fiscal year 2004 AFG program.

Fire departments having questions regarding the fiscal year 2003 AFG program can reach the FEMA Grant Program staff at 1-866-274-0960, or via email at firegrants@dhs.gov. On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
