The fellowship training program emphasizes basic research in all aspects of imaging and image processing. Basic imaging research in the areas of magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy, molecular imaging, contrast agent development, biochemistry, immunology, molecular biology and physiology will be encouraged. Active research projects include: functional MR imaging; proton MR spectroscopic imaging; fast imaging pulse sequence development; MR microscopy; tissue perfusion; clinical and experimental investi gation of white matter diseases; MRI role as an outcome measure for treatment trials in multiple sclerosis; evaluation of premalignant and malignant breast disease with positron emission tomography and nuclear medicine imaging of the breast; development and evaluation of novel MR contrast agents and radiotracers for cellular and molecular tracers; and innovative image processing and display algorithms.
The imaging laboratories of LDRR include a dedicated 1.5 Tesla MRI unit and a basic science laboratory including both "hot" and "cold" wet labs, cold room, and tissue culture facilities. In addition, various other imaging facilities at the NIH are also available to fellows for their research.
Applicants should hold an MD or PhD degree and should have completed clinical training in diagnostic radiology, nuclear medicine, or related fields. Applications from individuals currently in US residency programs may also be considered for research fellowship positions. US citizenship or permanent residency is required for this full-time appointment.
