Opportunities
  • Congress and the Shaping of American History

    • Interns at the Center for Legislative Archives in the National Archives will work primarily on the production of an educational document resource, Congress and the Shaping of American History. This two-volume publication examines the role of Congress during twelve major events in American history. Featuring realistic, color reproductions of original documents from the records of the House and Senate at the National Archives, this publication will bring to life important legislative dramas in our nation's history.

Applicants with interest or experience in history and historical research, political science, education, publishing, art history, and communications are welcome. Interns create topical time lines, historical essays, and biographical sketches of important congressional figures. In addition, interns conduct research on contemporary political reporting, analyzing editorials and examining major figures in American journalism. Interns also aid in identifying documents in House and Senate records relating to unit themes. Interns with a particular interest in American art may assist with the search for images to illustrate the historical narrative. Interns with a background in education will help with the development of classroom instructional materials that accompany the publication.

  • Archival Internships

    • Interns may choose to work on archival projects, including arrangement and description of records and reference support.

These internships allow students to become more familiar with finding aids, publications, and other resources available to conduct congressional research.
