Transcript: Powell Calls Meeting with N. Korean Official "Good"

Following is a transcript of Powell's remarks:

Remarks following lunch with Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov

Secretary Colin L. Powell
Sheraton Utama
Brunei
July 31, 2002

QUESTION: About North Korea, and how it went, and what happens now?

SECRETARY POWELL: Well, it was -- as Richard has no doubt briefed you -- it was a good meeting, a short meeting over coffee, and we agreed where we are and I told him that we should stay in touch and see how to pursue our dialogue. That's all I really have.

QUESTION: So there won't be another meeting here?

SECRETARY POWELL: No, I don't expect so, other than when we're all together. But I don't expect another one-on-one.

QUESTION: Did you hear anything that, interesting from Ivanov, that made you think more positively about the prospects of real dialogue?

SECRETARY POWELL: Clearly, Minister Ivanov was encouraging the North Koreans to move in the direction that they have been moving recently. (Inaudible.)

QUESTION: Did you talk about Iranian reactors?

SECRETARY POWELL: Yes.
