MarcoGram: Lewis and Clark: Corps of Discovery

The May 2004 edition of the MarcoGram features activities for students to engage in the spirit of the Lewis and Clark expedition. The lessons include warm-up topics of exploration, trading, art, and Native Americans followed by a wealth of links to more in-depth activities. The MarcoGram is part of the MarcoPolo Internet Project, a nonprofit consortium of educational organizations and the MCI Foundation. Founded in 1997, its mission is to provide high quality Internet content and professional development to teachers and students throughout the USA.

The Corps of Discovery

Lewis and ClarkThe Corps of Discovery -- In 1803, U.S. President Thomas Jefferson commissioned and expedition under the leadership Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to explore the American Northwest. Among the many successes of the 1804-6 Lewis and Clark Expedition were the important strides made in the mapping of the U.S. interior. This site sets the historical stage, features online access to Lewis and Clark maps and other primary resources, and provides related activities and lesson plans.

Discovering Lewis and ClarkThe centerpiece of Discovering Lewis and Clark is a 19-part synopsis of the expedition by Harry Fritz, Professor of History at the University of Montana, illustrated with selections from the journals of the expedition, photographs, maps, animated graphics, moving pictures, and sound files.

Lewis and Clark Education Project

The National Lewis and Clark Education Project engages educators in a dynamic understanding of The Lewis and Clark expedition (1803-1806) and the nature of the trail's historical and modern landscapes. To achieve these objectives, The Education Project utilizes advanced education technologies, integrates interdisciplinary curricula into the classroom, supports scholarly dialogue and develops multimedia geographical data accessible through the Internet.

Exploring the West from Monticello: A Perspective in Maps from Columbus to Lewis and Clark

The University of Virginia online exhibit examines the planning of the Lewis and Clark Expedition by Thomas Jefferson. It also examines the rich cartographic tradition, containing much fact and fiction, that made the expedition possible. Rivers, Edens, Empires: Lewis & Clark and the Revealing of America

Rivers, Edens, Empires: Lewis & Clark and the Revealing of AmericaThe Lewis and Clark Expedition was conceived to find a navigable river route through the continent. The Expedition was inspired by the possibilities of discovering Eden-like new lands and driven by competition with Spain and England for a North American Empire. This exhibit focuses on western exploration for rivers, Edens, and empires and showcases the many resources of the Library of Congress.
