Much of the research conducted by the Building Technologies Program
is funded through competitive solicitations. The program selects
research partners and projects based on factors such as energy savings
potential, likelihood of success, and alignment with the recommendations
of industry-developed technology roadmaps. DOE Funding Opportunities for Buildings R&D The chart below shows a number of funding opportunities in relation
to the various stages of the technology development process. Some
solicitations cover the entire continuum, from basic research through
demonstration. Others cover only basic research or advanced development
through demonstration. Another helpful resource is DOE's
e-Center, which offers a comprehensive guide to doing business
with DOE. Users can view current business opportunities, register
to receive notification of new business opportunities, and obtain
information and guidance on the acquisition and financial assistance
award process. Building Technologies Solicitation: Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy,
Energy Efficient Building Technologies
Time Frame: Fiscal Year, Second and Third Quarter Building
technology research solicitations cover research and development
on materials, components, and systems applicable
to both residential and commercial buildings. The R&D areas
of interest include the building envelope, space conditioning,

Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR)
Time Frame: Fiscal Year, First Quarter The SBIR and STTR
programs seek to increase the participation of small businesses
in federal
R&D and to increase private
sector commercialization of technology developed through
federal R&D. The programs support annual competitions among
small businesses for Phase I (feasibility of innovative concepts)
and Phase II (principal
research or R&D effort) awards, and include topics related

Solicitation: Industrial Technologies Program, Inventions & Innovation
Time Frame: Fiscal Year, Second and Third Quarter
Inventions and Innovation (I&I;) is open to all program areas within
DOE's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, including
building technologies. I&I; seeks to assist inventors, entrepreneurs,
and small businesses in bringing their energy-saving ideas to the
marketplace. Category 1 grants are awarded to technologies in the early stages
of development. I&I; funds up to $75,000 for Category 1. Category
2 grants are awarded for better-developed inventions moving towards
prototype development or commercialization. At a minimum, engineering
analysis and/or a bench scale model must be complete for an invention
to be considered a Category 2 application. Category 2 provides opportunities
for building technology projects. I&I; funds up to $250,000 for Category

Solicitation: Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy,
Energy Efficiency Research, Development, Demonstration and Deployment
Projects

The State Technologies Advancement Collaborative (STAC) seeks to
strengthen the collaborative relationship between DOE and States
to advance energy research, development, demonstration, and deployment
projects. Established by DOE, the National Association of State
Energy Officials (NASEO), and the Association of State Energy Research
and Technology Transfer Institutions (ASSERTI), this jointly managed
collaborative solicits and awards projects co-funded by DOE and

Time Frame: Ongoing
DOE's Office of Science supports grants and cooperative agreements
in Basic Energy Sciences, advancing the fundamental research in
natural sciences and engineering that leads to new and improved
energy technologies and to understanding and mitigating the environmental
impacts of energy technologies. The Office of Science also supports
research in High Energy and Nuclear Physics, Advanced Scientific
Computing Research, Fusion Energy Sciences, Biological and Environmental
