Security Clearances


Security Clearance Introduction  Operational Sponsor Frequently Asked Questions 
 
Reserve Marines and DoD civilians requiring a clearance (click here for more info) must update their security clearance investigation every 5 years for TOP SECRET and every 10 years for SECRET. To automate the process, the Defense Security Service (DSS) has developed an Electronic Personnel Security Questionnaire (EPSQ). EPSQ is an electronic version of the SF86 Questionnaire for National Security Positions form. This application must be downloaded to your personal computer and installed. The user can then complete the questionnaire, print and forward the file to MOBCOM.

This program can be downloaded directly from DSS by accessing http://www.dss.mil/epsq/

The DSS web site http://www.dss.mil/ also provides: 

  • All instructions necessary for the completion of the questionnaire. 

  • Frequently asked questions (FAQ's) are available on this site to address all concerns.

It is recommended that the requester of the investigation complete the "EPSQ SF86 Worksheet" prior to completing the Questionnaire. This worksheet contains instructions and is especially helpful when completing the questionnaire at a computer away from your home and records (i.e. a Reserve center.) You may download this worksheet here.  (Do NOT send this form to MOBCOM. It is for your convenience only.)

To submit a questionnaire for a new clearance, upgrade a clearance, or submit a periodic reinvestigation (PR).  Click here to view a slide show with the proper instructions.

**Things to remember:**

1.  Prepare your questionnaire package.

a. The exported file (name.ZDB)
b. The signed EPSQ printout
c. The signed release
d. The signed medical release
e. Fingerprint cards (if needed)

ADDENDUM

KNOWN PRINTER PROBLEM:

Blank pages were printing after items 24 or so. In case anyone has a similar problem in the future, the following is a remedy (assuming a Windows platform is used):

- Click the START button
- Select SETTINGS>PRINTERS
- Right click on the icon of the printer being utilized
- Select PROPERTIES
- Select DETAILS
- Select SPOOL SETTINGS
- Select "Print Directly to the printer." (The security section here had "Spool print jobs so program finishes printing faster.")
- Select OK
- Select APPLY
- Select OK

That should fix the problem.
