Major General Paul J. Sullivan Vice Chief, National Guard Bureau
Maj. Gen. Paul J. Sullivan is Vice Chief, National Guard Bureau, Arlington, Va. While fulfilling the duties as Vice Chief, General Sullivan assumed new duties and responsibilities that support the bureau's transformation into a joint headquarters. His working title will be Director of the Joint Staff, National Guard Bureau.

General Sullivan was commissioned through Officer Candidate School in 1970. He earned his pilot wings from Craig Air Force Base, Ala., and served in numerous flying positions, including instructor pilot and operations officer. He went on to serve as the Director of Operations and Chief of Staff for Headquarters Ohio Air National Guard, Columbus.

Prior to his current assignment, General Sullivan was the Assistant Adjutant General for Air, Ohio Air National Guard, where he steered the development of an integrated planning process by integrating the Air National Guard's long range and strategic plans with state and unit planning efforts. He has twice served as acting Deputy Director of the Air National Guard, and following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, General Sullivan assumed the additional duty of Senior Director of the Air National Guard Crisis Action Team. General Sullivan also served as Deputy Commander Air Forces, Headquarters U.S. Air Forces Europe, for a two-month period during Operation Iraqi Freedom. He is a command pilot with more than 3,000 flying hours in a variety of aircraft.
