10:30 AM - STATISTICAL ENGINEERING DIVISION SEMINAR: Statistical Engineering Division Seminar
Key Comparisons are international inter-laboratory studies used to establish degrees of equivalence between national measurement standards. Twenty-seven Key Comparisons in a wide range of metrological areas have been completed, with results posted in the International Comparisons Database (ICDB). The design, the analysis, and other statistical issues relating to these twenty-seven Key Comparisons will be discussed. This will be followed by an example of a supplementary comparison that was executed with NIST as a pilot lab.
Adriana Horníková , Statistical Engineering Division, NIST, hornikov@nist.gov.
NIST North Bldg, Room 152. (NIST Contact: Charles Hagwood, 301-975-2846, hagwood@nist.gov)

1:30 PM - POLYMERS DIVISION SEMINAR: Organic Semiconductor Devices: Molecular Design, Film Deposition, Morphology, and Architectures
Organic semiconductors are molecular solids consisting of conjugated core units packed so that the pi systems of neighboring molecules overlap, and charge carriers can move among them. They have unique functions, especially in thin film transistors, and may offer much less expensive process routes. This talk will describe the molecules, means of depositing them into thin films, and some device behaviors. The nanoscale structure that governs deposition mechanism and device performance will be illustrated. Applications to nonconventional electronics technologies will be considered.
Howard Katz , Professor, Johns Hopkins University.

The ceremony commemorates the installation of the Hassler memorial stone in the NIST Administration Building lobby. The stone, which includes an engraved tribute to Hassler and portrait relief, was previously at the Hassler gravesite in Philadelphia where a new stone has been erected. Visit the NIST Museum for the Hassler display, and also the Virtual Museum for a Hassler exhibit: http://museum.nist.gov/exhibits/exit1/Room2.html

ANNOUNCEMENTS

INAUGURAL MEETING OF THE NIST SCIENTIFIC WOMEN'S NETWORK
We are pleased to announce the formation of a Scientific Women’s Network at NIST. The goal is to provide an opportunity for the women from all the different scientific disciplines at NIST to meet and interact. The initial meeting will be Monday, October 25, 2004 in Lecture Room E in the basement of the Administration Building. We have invited one of our most prestigious NIST women scientists – Dr. Johanna M.H. Levelt Sengers (Anneke) – as our first speaker. The meeting will start at noon, so bring your lunch. We plan to have time for interacting before Anneke’s talk. Everyone is invited to attend. Anneke’s resume: Dr. Johanna M.H. Levelt Sengers (Anneke) was born and educated in the Netherlands, where she obtained her doctorate in physics at the Van der Waals Laboratory of the University of Amsterdam in 1959. In 1963, she and her husband immigrated to the United States, where they assumed research positions at the National Bureau of Standards, presently NIST. They raised four children. Since her retirement in 1995, she has been a CSTL Scientist Emeritus at NIST. She recently published a book on aspects of the history of her field of science. At NIST, Anneke and her collaborators have worked on the thermophysical properties of fluids and fluid mixtures, particularly near critical points, both for scientific and practical applications. She was a Group Leader in the Thermophysics Division from 1979 to 1987. She is a recipient of the DOC Silver and Gold Medals and was elected a NIST Fellow in 1985. Anneke holds an honorary doctorate from the Technical University Delft. She is a correspondent of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, and an elected member of both the National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Sciences. In 2003, she was chosen as the North American Laureate of the 2003 L’Oréal-UNESCO, an international award for scientific excellence for women
