OPM Director James: Prestigious Award Honors E-Training

Government Technology Leadership Award Goes to GOLEARN

Washington, D.C. -- The U.S. Office of Personnel Management's e-Training Initiative has received a 2003 Government Technology Leadership Award in recognition of the successful implementation of the GOLEARN.gov program, which makes online, cutting-edge educational opportunities available to federal employees across the globe.

"This award recognizes the work of so many people at OPM who have dedicated themselves to GOLEARN.gov and to fulfilling the Bush Administration's goal of making ongoing educational opportunities available to all federal employees," said OPM Director Kay Coles James. "I am grateful for the honor bestowed upon the OPM team of professionals, and I am very proud of their work on behalf of millions of taxpayers. The GOLEARN project represents a combined staff effort to translate a bold vision into a reality through technology, an effort that honors the legacy of Admiral Grace Hopper."

OPM was selected for the award by the Academy of Government Technology Leadership and an esteemed panel of judges from the public and private sectors who are experts on the federal government's use of technology. The Government Technology Leadership Award is sponsored by Government Executive magazine, a leading, national publication that focuses on federal government and its programs.

Launched in July 2002 and expected to save $784 million over the next 10 years through cost efficiencies, according to government and professional analyses, OPM's e-Training initiative is part of President Bush's Management Agenda to make the federal government citizen-centered, results-oriented and market-based. To date, nearly 190,000 registered users have completed more than 160,000 courses through GOLEARN. There are more than 3,000 online courses available at GOLEARN, including content specifically for employees working in law enforcement and homeland security.

Now in its 11th year, the Government Technology Leadership Award recognizes programs that make exceptional contributions to mission accomplishment, cost effectiveness and service to the public. The Gracie Award, the statuette given to award recipients, was named for Admiral Grace Hopper, a spirited pioneer in the government's use of technology.
