Women also are increasingly taking an interest in health issues,
enabling them to make health care decisions along with their health care providers. Women
are searching the Internet, participating in online support groups, and using other 21st
century technologies with their health care providers to gather health information and
promote their and their families' health.
Some of these technologies include telehealth,
or the use of electronic and telecommunications technologies to provide and support
long-distance clinical health care. Telehealth is used to transmit health information and
provide patient and professional health-related education, and support public health and
health administration activities. It uses videoconferencing, radio, the Internet, e-mail,
telephone communications, and other sophisticated peripheral equipment and software tools.
Telehealth is a broad term that incorporates telemedicine, the
use of telecommunications technology for delivering a wide variety of medical services to
sites that are at a distance from the provider. E-health refers
primarily to the use of the Internet for health care, health education, purchasing of
health-related products, and related services. The Internet has become a major source of
health information for all consumers.
The previous links provide valuable information on these technologies and
other devices that are improving women's health care.
