The use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is rising, both
among the general public and health care professionals. A treatment is called
complementary when it is used in addition to conventional (or widely accepted and
practiced by the medical community) treatments; it is called alternative when it is used
instead of conventional treatment. CAM therapies are used in an effort to prevent illness,
reduce stress, prevent or reduce side effects and symptoms, or control or cure disease.
Women are the primary users of CAM for themselves and their families.
The NWHIC web site will help you to familiarize yourself with CAM and the
latest research on the efficacy and safety of certain therapies and approaches. Resources
provided include the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine at the
National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Advisory Council for Complementary
and Alternative Medicine (NACCAM) Clinical Trials. Other resources include information on
alternative medical systems, mind-body interventions, manipulative and body-based methods,
energy therapies, and CAM and disease processes (cancer, hepatitis, arthritis, depression,
and diabetes).
