Distinguished International Scientist Collaboration Program Awards

Develop Innovative Research and Research Techniques Through International Collaborative Drug Abuse Research

Drug abuse and drug-related health consequences do not recognize national borders but are global problems requiring multinational consultation and cooperation. It is through the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) International Program that U.S. researchers work with their colleagues from other countries to advance knowledge; share research methods, techniques, and results; and validate treatment and prevention programs for use in different cultural settings. NIDA grantees and staff have noted that exchange visits among senior scientists from different countries can stimulate development of innovative research and techniques. Through the Distinguished International Scientist Collaboration Program, NIDA seeks to enhance international collaborative research on drug abuse and drug-related consequences by supporting professional visits to the United States by drug abuse researchers from any other country to collaborate with NIDA-supported scientists. These collaborations should produce a product or other outcome, such as new investigative topic, research paper, or grant proposal.

The Distinguished International Scientist Collaboration Program award provides a generous monthly allowance to cover short-term living expenses for a period from 1 to 3 months, depending on project requirements. Additionally, NIDA provides travel expenses for round-trip travel from and to the scientist's home country for the scientist only, as well as sickness/accident insurance for the scientist only.

Who Is Eligible?

An applicant for the NIDA Distinguished International Scientist Collaboration Program award must:

  • Have a minimum of 7 years of experience beyond the postdoctoral level in drug abuse research;
  • Document a scientific record that includes peer-reviewed publications;
  • Obtain letters of concurrence from the home institution, the collaborating U.S. scientist, and the U.S. host institution; and

  • Obtain two letters of support, one from a supervisor and one from a fellow researcher.

    Successful candidates will be highly qualified researchers, and priority will be given to new collaborations. Applications must propose projects that fall within the NIDA research mission; have the potential to advance the scientific agenda; be likely to produce a product or other outcome (such as a scientific paper or research grant proposal) within 1 year; and offer both the potential and mechanisms to apply enhanced research skills in the non-U.S. scientist's home country.

    How Should I Apply?

    Qualified individuals should complete an application that outlines the proposed collaborative effort, including timeframe and expected outcome; describes how the collaborative effort will advance the scientific agenda (as assessed by significance, approach, innovation, and qualifications); and discusses how the proposed collaborative effort offers the potential and mechanisms to apply enhanced research skills in the applicant's home country.

    Annual Application Deadline: Applications are accepted throughout the year.
    Annual Notification of Award: Notifications are sent out one month after receipt and review of application.

    The exchange visit must be completed by December 31 of the calendar year immediately following the award announcement.

    Application materials can be downloaded from this Web site in Adobe PDF format or obtained from the NIDA International Program.
