Identifying Exposure Pathways
This online learning program explains
how ATSDR identifies how people come into contact with hazardous substances
(e.g., how they become exposed) through different environmental media.
The learn-by-doing simulation program
is now available for public comment through November 3, 2003. Comments received
will be used to improve this program and others that might be developed in
the future.
It is hoped that this program will
provide public health professionals and members of the public with an interesting
and enjoyable way of learning more about ATSDR's public health assessment
process, how they can participate in the process, and ultimately how they
can work with ATSDR and state health assessors to better protect public health.
Comments already received during
pilot testing have led us to enhance the online training. After the comment
period ends, we plan to add an interactive scoping checklist to the course
so that persons who complete it will learn the following:
- what steps to take when investigating
a waste site or release,
- who needs to be contacted as
part of the health assessment process,
- what information is needed before
conducting a site visit,
- what information is needed to
determine whether exposure had occurred or is occurring, and
- how the collected information
should be used to identify possible completed pathways of exposure.
