Secretary Tom Ridge Announces Appointment of Two New Members of the Homeland Security Advisory Council

For Immediate Release
Office of the Press Secretary
October 2, 2003

Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge is pleased to announce the appointment of Charlotte, North Carolina Mayor Patrick McCrory and Fraternal Order of Police Grand Lodge President, Chuck Canterbury, to serve as members of the Homeland Security Advisory Council (HSAC). The Council provides advice and recommendations to Secretary Ridge on homeland security-related issues. The HSAC is comprised of experts from state and local governments, first preventer and responder communities, academia and the private sector.

Mayor Patrick McCrory was elected to serve an unprecedented fourth term as mayor of Charlotte in December 2001. Active in local government homeland security issues, the Mayor serves on the advisory board of the U.S. Conference of Mayors and currently serves as the organization’s Housing and Community Development Committee chairman. Prior to serving as Mayor, McCrory served as an At-Large member of the Charlotte City Council.

Chuck Canterbury of South Carolina is a Major in the Horry County Police Department where his career of more than 25-years has included service in the Patrol Division and the Criminal Investigations Division.  He also served as the Training Division Supervisor, during which he was certified as an instructor in basic law enforcement, firearms, chemical weapons, and pursuit driving.  He currently serves as the President of the Grand Lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police, an organization representing more than 300,000 law enforcement professionals nation-wide.

"Pat McCrory and Chuck Canterbury are committed public servants who will bring valuable insights from the frontlines of the war on terror. I look forward to their good counsel and am pleased that they will add their talents and experience to our efforts to make our country more secure," said Secretary Ridge.

The HSAC will convene its next meeting on October 3, 2003 in Detroit, Michigan. A detailed Federal Register notice regarding the meeting was posted on September 17, 2003.
