Budget and Financial Information

The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) receives its funding through annual Congressional appropriation. Every year, the President submits a budget request to the House Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Subcommittee and the Senate Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies Subcommittee who conduct hearings on the accomplishments and needs of NHGRI before its budget request is approved by Congress.

The NHGRI budget supports extensive extramural research, including the Human Genome Project's (HGP) work toward completing a finished sequence of the human genome; ongoing research in genetic science and technology; and a broad program that explores the ethical, legal and social implications of genetic research, which informs the creation of policy recommendations on the use of genetic information. The NHGRI budget provides funding for a dynamic intramural research program in genetic and genomic science and technology, as well as clinical research in the genetic causes of disease. In addition NHGRI funds education and training opportunities to foster the development of the next generation of genetic scientists.
