The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) leads the participation of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the International Human Genome Project (HGP). NHGRI directs and supports work on the sequencing of the human genome; funds research on the genome's structure, function, and role in health and disease; and supports studies on the ethical, legal and social implications (ELSI) of genome research. NHGRI develops the resources and technology to accelerate genome research and its application to human health, trains investigators, and disseminates genome information to the public and health professionals.

To carry out its diverse duties, NHGRI is organized into three divisions: the Office of the Director, the Division of Extramural Research, and the Division of Intramural Research.

Office of the Director

The Office of the Director (OD) oversees NHGRI's general operation, administration and communications. It provides overall leadership, sets policies, develops scientific, fiscal and management strategies, and coordinates the Human Genome Project with other federal, private and international programs. The OD also supports international meetings, workshops, and other activities essential to the efficient international coordination and exchange of data, and is divided into the Office of Policy, Communications and Education (OPCE) and the Office of Administrative Management (OAM). Three chartered advisory committees - whose members include scientists and leaders in public policy, health policy, management, law, and economics - provide advice to NHGRI and NIH.

Division of Extramural Research

The Division of Extramural Research (DER) supports and administers the NIH's role in the Human Genome Project (HGP). In consultation with the broader genomic community, DER establishes the scientific goals and research priorities needed to achieve the project's objectives. It also supports grants for research as well as for training and career development at sites all around the country. Three branches perform the work of this division. The Extramural Programs Branch administers and supports grants for extramural research, institutional training, fellowships, career awards, and minority awards in support of the HGP; plans and supports activities that advance genomics, and directs the Ethical Legal and Social Implications research program, which explores the ethical and policy issues raised by genetic research. The Scientific Review Branch (SRB) plans and conducts the initial peer review of most research applications. The Grants Administration Branch oversees the fiscal aspects of the NHGRI grant programs.

Division of Intramural Research

The Division of Intramural Research (DIR) at NHGRI plans and conducts a broad program of laboratory and clinical research to translate genome research into a greater understanding of human genetic disease. The DIR acts as a focal point for genome research at NIH and maintains core facilities that serve as a resource for the entire NIH intramural research community. It evaluates research efforts and establishes intramural program priorities; allocates funds, space and personnel ceilings to ensure maximum utilization of available resources in the attainment of NHGRI objectives; and integrates new research activities into the program structure. The DIR also collaborates with other NIH Institutes, Centers and external research institutions; maintains an awareness of national and international research efforts in relevant program areas; and advises the director and staff on areas of science and intramural research programs of interest to NHGRI.
