What does DISA do?


The Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) is a Department of Defense (DoD) combat support agency under the direction of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Networks and Information Integration [ASD(NII)]. It is responsible for planning, engineering, acquiring, fielding and supporting global net-centric solutions and operating the Defense Information System Network to serve the needs of the President, Vice President, Secretary of Defense, Joint Chiefs of Staff, Combatant Commanders and other DoD components under all conditions of peace and war.

DISA provides a seamless, secure and reliable web of communications networks, computers, software, databases, applications and other capabilities that meet the information processing and transport needs of DoD. DISA also ensures the integration and interoperability of command and control, communications, computers and intelligence (C4I) systems.


When and how was DISA established?

DISA was established in Washington, D.C., as the Defense Communications Agency (DCA) with 450 employees on May 12, 1960, by Secretary of Defense Thomas B. Gates. Its mission was to manage the Defense Communications System (DCS), a consolidation of the independent long-haul communications functions of the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
