A Word About Security
DTIC's collections contain information that
is:
- classified Confidential or Secret
- sensitive, and therefore its distribution
is limited
- unclassified (and available for public
release)
Throughout our homepages, there are references
to classified information, to information that is unclassified but limited,
and to information that is public release, or unclassified, unlimited.
Information can be sensitive (and therefore
limited) for a number of reasons:
- Privacy - to protect the privacy of individuals
and (much less commonly) corporations.
- Copyright - materials may be placed in
our collection that have been copyrighted, and DTIC® is responsible
for protecting those rights.
- Proprietary information - information
about companies that do work for the Defense Department whose business
processes are protected.
- Contractor performance evaluations by
government monitors.
- Software documentation.
- Administrative or operational use by
the authoring organization.
- Premature dissemination would harm the
national interest.
- Direct military support is being provided.
- Information about foreign governments.
- Information that is the result of tests
or evaluations of military hardware or processes.
- Technology that has been deemed militarily
critical and is not to be shared with other nations ("export-controlled").
- Information to be safeguarded that has
been specified by law, regulation or other formal Defense Department
guidance.
