TO: Chief Executive Officers of All National Banks, Department 
and Division Heads, and All Examining Personnel

On June 1, 2000, the Office of the Comptroller of the 
Currency (OCC) published jointly with the Board of Governors 
of the Federal Reserve System, the Federal Deposit Insurance 
Corporation, and the Office of Thrift Supervision, a new 
regulation (12 CFR Part 40) to implement privacy provisions 
of the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act.  These provisions generally 
restrict the ability of financial institutions to transfer 
nonpublic personal information about consumers to nonaffiliated 
third parties, and require financial institutions to provide 
certain privacy-related notices to consumers.

Attached is a copy of the final rule as it appeared in 
the Federal Register.  Also attached is a summary of the 
final rule that the OCC has prepared to assist national 
banks in their compliance efforts.
