WHAT IS THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA)?

The Freedom of Information Act, which was enacted in 1966, gives any person the right to request access to federal agency records or information. All agencies of the United States government are required to disclose records upon receiving a written request for them, except for those records that are protected from disclosure by the FOIA.

The Legal Services Corporation is not an agency of the United States government, but it is subject to the FOIA. So any person has the right to request Legal Services Corporation records, and the Corporation must release those records to the requester unless they are protected from disclosure by the FOIA.
