Note: an "X" in a cell indicates that the data
element is available for the designated survey component.
A blank cell indicates the data element is not available for that survey
component. For data elements that are only available for private use,
contact NSF about obtaining access to these restricted data.
Note that data from the 1993 National Survey of College Graduates is also
available on a separate CD-ROM. All the available data from this CD is included
in the on-line SESTAT 1993 NSCG public-use data file, but the CD does not follow
SESTAT variable naming conventions and does not include the detailed documentation
available for the on-line data.

Quality and other technical information related to this item:
1993
An annualized full-time salary variable is included on the 1993 file. Similar to the
Current Population Survey (CPS), the 1993 SESTAT salary questions allowed the respondent
to report their salary on whatever basis they found most convenient (i.e. hourly, weekly, monthly, yearly,
academic year, or some other period). Salary responses that were not given as
annualized were converted to annual based on the assumption of a 12 month year, a 52 week year,
24 week bimonthly, 26 week every two-weeks, and a 40 hour week. Those reporting for academic
year were left as reported. There were two issues with regard to the 1993 SESTAT salary data that led to not
creating a recoded annual salary for certain groups of respondents. First, the surveys did not collect
data that allowed individualized conversion factors for respondents (this impacted those employed
part-time). Second, some respondents with unusual salary arrangements
may have answered inconsistently (e.g. self-employed consultants reporting fees charged customers). Because of
possible inaccuracies in estimating, a recoded annual salary variable was not created for the primary
job in the following instances:
- those employed part-time, and
- those reporting they were self-employed.
No annualized salary variables were created for the second job. In addition, for the SDR and the NSCG,
those values at the extreme low and high ends (typically the lowest and highest 5 percent) were set
to missing and imputed. For the NSRCG, the respondents in these low and high
salary groups were recalled and the data, if verified, was left on the file. For NSRCG,
salaries over $100,000 were recoded to the weighted average of those over $100,000.
The 1995 SESTAT surveys were modified to collect data on an annualized basis (although
CATI respondents who were not able to report an annual amount were given the option
of reporting in other units). In addition, additional questions were included
on hours worked per week.
No ranges were imposed; all responses were accepted. Data users will use
these data as a proxy for annual income. In 1995, the following questions
will be added to convert all salaries into an annual salary: How many weeks
did you work? How many hours a week do you usually work? Item non-response
was as follows:
- Amount: SDR = 3.0 percent; NSCG = 4.7 percent; NSRCG = 6.8 percent
- Period: SDR = 4.8 percent; NSCG = 4.0 percent; NSRCG = 6.8 percent
General
For some surveys, the response for this data item was not obtained directly
from the survey form, but was instead available from an administrative
data source outside SESTAT, and is indicated by the word "SYSTEM" for
the source. In other cases, the survey contractor assigned codes to
verbatim responses. A typical example involves the location codes, either
state or country, for universities or colleges. The survey form asks
the respondent to provide the name of the university at which a degree
was earned. When the survey results are processed, the name of the
university is compared to an external lookup table containing university
names and their location codes. When a matching university name is found,
the corresponding location code becomes part of the SESTAT database.
