Truvada includes two antiretroviral drugs: Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (Viread) and Emtricitabine (Emtriva, FTC). Each of these drugs is a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI). This class of drugs blocks reverse transcriptase, an enzyme (cell protein that helps chemical reactions) that HIV needs to make more copies of itself.
