Justice statistics from the United Nations The United Nations (UN) is the principal source of comparative crime and justice statistics. The UN Office for Drug Control and Crime Prevention (ODCCP) promotes research and collaboration, studies new and emerging forms of crime, and produces documents to assist in the global fight against crime and drug abuse. Within the ODCCP, the Centre for International Crime Prevention (CICP) maintains the Internet-based United Nations Crime and Justice Information Network (UNCJIN ), which includes crime statistics and publications. This site provides an extensive list of links to the United Nations agencies and other research organizations and universities. The Center also supports the work of intergovernmental bodies which set out an international strategy and measures to prevent crime and promote stable criminal justice systems. United Nations documents relating to these intergovernmental commissions and congresses are available online.
Under the auspices of NIJ, the first five UNCJS Surveys, United Nations World Surveys on Crime Trends and Criminal Justice Systems, 1970-1994, have been restructured into a five-wave file, whereby the file structure and variable names have been standardized across years to allow these data to be analyzed more easily. This collection consists of 33 data files containing information on reported crime, police personnel and budget, prosecution, conviction, and sentencing for over 150 countries. The Sixth UNCJS Survey (1995-97) is available from the UNCJIN website. The International Crime Victim Survey (ICVS) is a program of standardized sample surveys to look a householders' experience with crime, policing, crime prevention and feelings of unsafety in a large number of countries. It is coordinated by the Department of Justice of the Netherlands in conjunction with the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute. Adopted on the recommendation of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice at its fourth session (Vienna, Austria, 30 May - 9 June, 1995), the United Nations International Study on Firearm Regulation provides data on firearm regulation, including issues of ownership, possession and use; manufacturing and trade; smuggling and other illegal dealings; demographic and crime statistics; policy and public education initiatives; and the identification of key contact persons within participating countries. Official country websites Many governments maintain websites devoted to that country's statistical agency or department responsible for justice, public safety, and/or law. The websites listed below are a sample of such websites which provide national crime or justice statistics.

International datasets from the National Archive of Criminal Justice Data The National Archive of Criminal Justice Data (NACJD), sponsored by the Bureau of Justice Statistics, the National Institute of Justice, and the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, acquires, archives, processes, and provides access to electronic criminal justice data collections for research and instruction. The NACJD website provides downloadable access to hundreds of criminal justice data collections free of charge.
