Infrastructure

The SAIN Infrastructure facilitates public access and use of comprehensive ecological, social, cultural, and economic data. The node's information infrastructure integrates biological (and related) data into one system with a web interface, an internet map server and a web-enabled database; interactive analytical, modeling, and visualization tools are being added.

Our Oracle database is populated with regional data and information, making the Southern Appalachian Information Node a portal to biological information that relates to the region no matter where this information is located. With the SAIN system, anyone is able to using the same data to make human activities more sustainable. We are using ESRI products (Arc SDE and Arc IMS) that interact with Oracle Spatial on a UNIX platform to produce map services for SAIN users.

If you would like to learn more about our infrastructure, contact the SAIN Systems Architect or the SAIN Geospatial Applications Administrator.

SAIN & Our National Role: Metadata Infrastructure Support

The uniqueness of our Metadata Infrastructure Support is the use of a highly automated software concept (Mercury) that is consortium based and leverages the efforts of several agencies, having NASA as a major sponsor. This NBII-wide metadata infrastructure is an XML-based harvesting system with a user-friendly interface that provides the user with a number of search capabilities -including temporal and spatial- while acting as a central server offering metadata services and data hosting. If you want to experience this harvesting system, search the SAIN Web Harvester.
