The Warren Grant Magnuson Clinical Center, a federally funded biomedical research facility, is part of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. As the research hospital for NIH, the Clinical Center supports clinical investigations conducted by the institutes. The Clinical Center was specially designed to bring patient-care facilities close to research labs so that findings of basic and clinical scientists can be moved quickly from labs to the treatment of patients. • Some 1,200 credentialed physicians, dentists, and Ph.D. researchers
• 660 nurses
• 570 allied health-care professionals, such as pharmacists, dietitians, medical technologists, imaging technologists, therapists, medical records and medical supply staff.
• More than 1,600 laboratories conduct basic and clinical research
• Some 1,000 active clinical research protocols
• Fellowships, Training Programs, and other opportunities, such as the Medical Staff Fellowship Program; Clinical Electives Program; Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Program; Summer Research Fellowship Program
• As a research facility, only patients with the precise kind or stage of illness under investigation are admitted for treatment. There are no labor and delivery services and no other services common to community hospitals. All patients must be referred by their physicians.
• Areas of clinical study include aging; alcohol abuse and alcoholism; allergy, arthritis musculoskeletal and skin diseases; cancer; child health; chronic pain; deafness and other communication disorders; dental and orofacial disorders; diabetes; digestive and kidney diseases; eye disorders; heart, lung, and blood diseases; infectious diseases; medical genetics; mental health; neurological disorders; and stroke.

Physical Facility

• 14-story building, 7 million bricks, more than 5,000 rooms, 9 miles of corridor, 2.5 million square feet, 24 inpatient care units, 15 outpatient clinics, 325 beds, and a Clinical Pathology Department housed in a space the size of a football field.

Historical Highlights:

• November 1948: Construction of the Clinical Center began.
• July 2, 1953: Clinical Center dedicated.
• July 6, 1953: First patient admitted to new facility by Dr. Roy Hertz for protocol studying hormone treatments for prostate cancer.
• September 5, 1963 Surgical wing housing research facilities for cardiac and neurosurgery, research labs, and the Blood Bank opened. Now used as animal care facility.
• October 22, 1981: 13-story Ambulatory Care Research Facility (ACRF) clinic addition completed and the Warren Grant Magnuson Clinical Center dedicated.
• March 22, 1984: The MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) unit became operational.
• October 22, 1987: The in vivo NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) Research Center, adjacent to the hospital, completed.
• April 8, 1991:A state-of-the-art Blood Bank and Transfusion Medicine facility opened.
• May 1991: An addition to the NMR Research Center, the 4.0 Tesla Magnet, completed.
• June 1992: A-wing addition to the east side of the building completed, adding NCI and NIAID labs conducting AIDS research.
• July 1993: Hematology/Bone Marrow transplant unit on 2 West opened to investigate improved transplant procedures and develop gene therapy techniques.
• May 1994: First multi-institute inpatient unit specially designed and staffed for children opened on 11 East.
• February 1996: Details on clinical research studies conducted at the Clinical Center are made available on the World Wide Web, increasing opportunities for physicians and patients to participate in NIH clinical investigations. http://clinicalstudies.info.nih.gov/
• October 1996: First meeting of the Clinical Center Board of Governors appointed by the Secretary of Health and Human Services, marks a new governing system for the Clinical Center.
• July 1997: Start-up of 3,000-square-foot cell processing facility, created to meet increasing investigative needs for cell products used in immunotherapy, gene therapy, and stem cell transplantation research.
• November 4, 1997: Vice President Al Gore and Senator Mark O. Hatfield attended groundbreaking ceremonies for the Mark O. Hatfield Clinical Research Center. The new center, which will include a modern research facility with a 234-bed hospital, outpatient care capability and research laboratories, is scheduled to be complete in 2004.
