Frequently Asked Questions about The Consumer Action
Handbook
|
|
|
What is the Consumer
Action Handbook and how do I get a copy?
The Handbook,
one of the most popular books published by the federal government, is an
easy-to-read guide offering pre-purchase information and ways to resolve
marketplace problems. There are thousands of names, addresses, telephone
numbers and electronic addresses of corporations, trade groups, state and
local consumer protection offices and federal agencies. It is available
in .pdf, .htm, and ASCII text formats. It's a large publication so we have
it available in sections to make access more convenient.
For a printed copy,
order online. You can also call 1-888-8 PUEBLO (that's 1-888-878-3256),
or send your name and address to
Handbook
Pueblo, Colorado 81009.

How often is the
Handbook updated?
The web version of the Handbook
is updated constantly, and you can access all the information in the Handbook
using HTML,
Adobe Acrobat PDF files, and
text
files. The most recent printed edition is a revised version of the 2003
Consumer Action Handbook, printed in September 2000. We're hoping to release
another revision in Spring of 2003.

How many copies can I
order?
Here at the Federal Consumer Information FCIC, we've been enjoying an incredible
response to the release of the
2003 Consumer Action Handbook. Unfortunately, this means we have
to restrict consumers to one copy of the Handbook per order. You
can order a free copy of the Handbook three different ways:
call 1 (888) 8 PUEBLO
(that's 1-888-878-3256),
write to: Handbook
Federal Citizen Information Center
Pubelo, CO

or
order online at www.pueblo.gsa.gov.

Why do some companies
have stars or symbols by their names?
Some companies in the "Consumer Assistance Directory" have a small Mobius
symbol by their names. This symbol designates them as a member of the
Society for Consumer Affairs Professionals (SOCAP). SOCAP is one of the largest
sponsors of the Handbook, and is listed with other sponsors on the "
Contributors' Page." These organizations helped fund the printing and distribution
of the Handbook to ensure that as many consumers as possible are able to
utilize the information in the Handbook. Gold stars next to listings in
the "Consumer Assistance Directory" also highlight contributors.

How can I get my
company/organization/office listed in the Consumer Action
Handbook?
Organizations requesting a listing in the Handbook must be
national, have a business relationship directly with consumers, and be able to
respond to consumer complaints and comments. Requests for inclusion in the
Handbook will be reviewed periodically and you will be notified if your
organization will be listed. All information should be typed on letterhead and
sent to:
Attn: Handbook Addition,
Federal Citizen Information Center (XCC)
Room G-142 1800 F Street NW Washington DC 20405
