Secretary of State Madeleine K. Albright to Lead American Delegation to Funeral of President Asad
The President has asked Secretary of State Madeleine K. Albright to lead the delegation to Syria, to attend the funeral for the late President Hafiz al-Asad. Secretary Albright will depart Washington on Monday, June 12, attend the funeral on Tuesday, June 13, and is scheduled to return to Washington on Wednesday, June 14.

June 10, 2000: "I was saddened to hear today of the death of Syrian President Hafiz al-Asad. I want to extend my condolences to the president's family and the Syrian people on their loss.
President Asad ruled Syria for over 30 years and stood out as a major figure in the region. He made a strategic choice for peace at Madrid in 1991. In all of our talks, he remained committed to that choice. We strongly believe that was the right choice and expect that Syria will continue on the path of peace. We look forward to working with Syria to bring about the goal of a comprehensive Middle East peace." Secretary Albright
