PROJECT BIOSHIELD
On July 21, 2004, President Bush signed into law Project BioShield, which provides new tools to improve medical countermeasures protecting Americans against a chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear (CBRN) attack.
Project BioShield is a comprehensive effort overseen jointly by Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy G. Thompson and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge, and involving other Federal agencies, including the National Institutes of Health, as appropriate. Project Bioshield will:
- Ensure that resources are available to pay for “next-generation” medical countermeasures,
- Expedite the conduct of NIH research and development on medical countermeasures, and
- Give FDA the ability to make promising treatments quickly available in emergency situations
More information about Project Bioshield is provided below. Please check back for updates.
