The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) conducts and supports research on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of infectious, immunologic, and allergic diseases. The Institute is pursuing investigations in bacteriology, virology, mycology, immunology, and parasitology. Its major responsibility includes research on the immune system and its disorders, including AIDS. NIAID is organized into divisions that award grants and contracts to scientists in universities and private research institutions. There is also an intramural research division.

Free consumer pamphlets are available on allergic diseases, chronic fatigue syndrome, rabies, sexually transmitted diseases, lyme disease, HIV/AIDS, and the immune system. A publications list is available.
