Directions to FRF from Norfolk Airport
The quickest, easiest access to the FRF is from Norfolk International Airport. We are about a 1 1/2 hour drive south from the airport.

When you leave the airport, you will either be on Norview Avenue or will take a left onto Norview. Proceed on Norview until you see U.S. 64 signs, go over the bridge and turn right onto U.S. 64 heading toward Virginia Beach. Stay in left lanes of 64 until you are through the Virginia Beach traffic which can be heavy during rush hour.

Watch for signs for the Outer Banks and Nags Head, exit 291B. This is the first exit past the Battlefield Boulevard exit. As soon as you exit, quickly shift to the leftmost lane to get on Route 168.

Follow 168 down to the Outer Banks (It eventually also becomes 158). As of May 2001 it is 4 lanes all the way. However, you will have to pay a $2 toll in Virginia.

After crossing the Wright Memorial Bridge (over the sound) proceed a mile or so, until you come to the fifth red light. To your left will be a Crown station, to your right, the Dare County Visitors Center. To get to the Field Research Facility, turn left onto Rt. 12. If you want to go to your hotel first, bear to the right. WARNING - when you cross the bridge, its time to shift to "Outer Banks" time, slow down and adhere to the posted speed limits - they are enforced!

The FRF is located about 7 miles north of the light, about 1/4 mile north of the big water tower on the left and "downtown" Duck, on the right. We are just after your first view of Currituck Sound. You next pass Ships Watch and Sandy Ridge developments on the right, and then enter our property – where there are no houses. The entrance road is on the right marked by an electronic gate and Field Research Facility sign. If you pass the Duck Volunteer Fire Department, you went a bit to far.

Our number at the FRF is 252-261-3511, someone is normally here from around 7:00 a.m. until 5:30 every week day.

Directions to Norfolk Airport from FRF
Follow US 158/168 back to the Elizabeth City cutoff (~30 miles) and stay in right lane. It will become 168 to Chesapeake/Virginia Beach. Watch for a right exit off of 168 onto US 64 heading "west" toward Richmond/Virginia Beach (don't be confused by signs for 464 or 664).

Follow Interstate 64 past the exit for Bay Bridge tunnel, until you see signs for Airport exit (Azalea Garden Road). Follow Azalea Garden Road, and you will see signs for return rental cars and/or departing flights. Have a good trip!
