Abstract

The National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (NFID) was founded in 1973 as a nonprofit public organization dedicated to research in prevention and education about infectious diseases. NFID seeks to educate health professionals and the public about health practices in sanitation, personal hygiene, and immunization, which are effective in preventing infection. The Foundation also supports basic and clinical research, funds special lectures and symposia, and provides grants and fellowships, which assist individuals to become specialists in infectious diseases. The Foundation coordinates and administrates the work of the National Coalition for Adult Immunization, which is a network of more than 125 national organizations dedicated to promoting adult immunizations, primarily through educational and motivational activities.

Publications

NFID has published two books on infectious diseases, and brochures on influenza, pneumonia, and chicken pox. Other booklets on specific diseases are planned. Serial publications: The Double Helix (newsletter), bimonthly--news of research findings, Federal legislation, a calendar of national and international meetings, and reports of academic and governmental research programs; Infectious Diseases--Clinical Updates (newsletter), quarterly--written to meet practicing clinicians' needs for accurate and timely information about infectious diseases.
