The Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO) represents public health directors in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. territories and possessions. The association helps state health departments to develop and implement programs and policies that enhance public health and prevent disease, and it works to develop, formulate and influence national public health policy. In 1981, the association established the Public Health Foundation, a non-profit organization that monitors developments in public health and facilitates information exchange between public and voluntary health agencies, researchers and educators.
