POSITION: Research Chemist, GS-1320-11

LOCATION: Peoria, IL

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: The incumbent is a Research Chemist in the Plant Polymer Research Unit at the National Center for Agricultural Utilization Research, Peoria, Illinois. The position will entail the modification of zein, the dominant corn protein in collaboration with an industrial (CRADA) partner. Techniques used will include addition of non-reactive additives and chemical substitution of the zein using various reagents that will either provide branch points or cross links. The goal of the research is to develop a new safe, environmentally friendly fiber that will provide a new market for a by-product of the bioethanol industry.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Recent Ph.D. in chemistry, polymer science, biochemistry or related field of study. Experience in experience in chemical synthesis and polymer characterization is desired.
