THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF
AGRICULTURE IS AN EQUAL
OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER.

ANNOUNCEMENT NO: RA-05-004L

POSITION: Research Molecular Biologist/Research Geneticist (Plants)

LOCATION: Aberdeen, Idaho

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: This position is located at the Small Grains and Potato Germplasm Research Unit, Aberdeen, Idaho. Using molecular markers, the incumbent will saturate genomic regions previously identified as associated with virus resistance genes in the potato species, S. etuberosum. Markers identified as closely linked to virus resistances will be developed into SCARs and incorporated into a marker-assisted selection (MAS) protocol for use in potato breeding. Additionally, the incumbent also will identify genomic regions of a S. etuberosum-derived population associated with resistances to green peach aphid and wireworm—primary insect pests of potato. Molecular markers to be used include (but are not limited) to RFLPs, SSRs, ESTs, and AFLPs.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Ph.D. in molecular biology, genetics, or related field is required. Training in contemporary methods of molecular biology, specifically expertise in the generation and analysis of PCR-based and RFLP molecular markers is required. An educational background in agriculture/plant sciences and training in the use of HPLC-MS are desirable.
