NIGERIAN PRESIDENT VISITS ADF-FUNDED HOUSING PROJECT IN JIGAWA STATE

JIGAWA STATE, NIGERIA - June 2, 2004 - President Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria toured the recently completed Marawa Housing Project, an emergency housing construction program sponsored by the African Development Foundation and the Government of Nigeria's Jigawa State.

An innovative venture in development, the Marawa project used environmentally friendly compressed-brick technology. It also employed local sociologists to assist engineers in designing houses that are appropriate to the cultural preferences and economic needs of local residents. Each home was built at a cost of less than US $3,000 per unit, and the project generated dozens of local jobs while providing laborers with professional training in masonry and carpentry.
