Abstract

Established in 1966, this Institute supports and conducts basic research focusing on the interaction between humans and potentially toxic or harmful agents in their environment. The main research focus is on recognizing, identifying, and investigating environmental factors that may be harmful and quantifying those factors; and developing an understanding of the mechanisms of the actions of toxic agents on biological systems. Information based on this research is transmitted to regulatory agencies, other government agencies, Congress, medical and research communities, industry, and the general public. NIEHS research also forms the basis for preventive programs for environment-related diseases and for action by regulatory agencies. The Institute makes grants and awards to research organizations.

Publications

Reprints of NIEHS scientists' studies published in other journals, fact sheets on selected topics, and booklets and brochures are available. NIEHS is the headquarters agency for the National Toxicology Program, whose Annual Plan is available on the NTP Home Page. NTP Technical Reports, Toxicology Reports and the Report on Carcinogens, as well as Environmental Health Perspectives and EHP supplements on selected topics are available through the Environmental Health Information Service.
