Prescription Drug Plans

Interim Drug Plan Bidder Data Sets

These data sets are being used to meet industry's requests that CMS share information from public data sets that could help potential drug plan bidders to better understand or estimate the eligible Medicare beneficiary population's utilization of prescription drugs.

  • FEHBP Drug Utilization Index CY 2002 (Zipped Excel, 22 KB)
This Excel Workbook contains utilization indices by state for three measures of annual per capita utilization: spending, prescriptions filled and supply days. These are separately reported for total sales, retail sales and mail order. Three years are reported, each on a separate spreadsheet, 2000, 2001, 2002. Each index is relative to the national mean for the measure. The data are for federal retirees 65+, enrolled in the Federal Employee Health Benefit national Blue Cross Blue Shield plan.
  • Distributions of prescription drug expenses based on the Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey
Distributions of Medicare beneficiaries' prescription drug expenses provide information for analyzing and projecting payments under the new Medicare Part D drug benefit. The information provided may give additional insights into the drug expenditure patterns of Medicare beneficiaries. These distributions are consistent with the Office of the Actuary's projections of the cost of the drug benefit.
  • Statistical Compendium: Medicaid Pharmacy Benefit Use and Reimbursement in 1999
Provides detailed state-by-state and national data on the use of and reimbursement for prescription drugs in Medicaid. The data show use and reimbursement by beneficiary demographic characteristics (age, sex, and race), basis of eligibility (children, adults, disabled, and aged), and Medicare-Medicaid dual eligible status.
  • MCBS Data - (Zipped Text file 3K) and (Zipped Word file 7K)
The MCBS data provided to help prepare MMA Title 1 bids are a subset of the elements available in the 2001 MCBS Cost and Use file. These elements include demographic characteristics such as age and sex, insurance characteristics (including existence of prescription drug coverage), summary Medicare Part A and Part B use and expenditure, and annual prescription drug expenditure (with a breakdown of this spending by various payer categories, including consumer payments). Note that the full dataset is available to researchers who enter into a data use agreement with the Agency.
