Abstract

Founded in 1974 by Billie Jean King, the Women's Sports Foundation is a national charitable educational organization seeking to advance the well-being and leadership skills of girls and women through sports and physical activity. The Foundation's Participation, Education, Advocacy, Research and Leadership programs are made possible by gifts from individuals, foundations and corporations. Interested parties can contact the Foundation for information about its Speaker Service, Community Action Programs, grants and scholarships or membership via the Internet or Women’s Sports Infoline.

Publications

The Women’s Sports Foundation offers several publications, educational materials and research reports. The following are among the Foundation's list of available publications: Parent’s Guide to Girls Sports (Bilingual, English/Spanish); Women’s Sports Foundation Education Guide: Special Issues for Coaches of Women’s Sports; Sports Injury Concerns: The Female Athlete; A Sport Leader Media Helper: Answers to the Most Frequently Asked Questions About Women’s Sports and Fitness; Playing Fair: A Guide to Title IX; Title IX-Media Helper and Sports in the Lives of Urban Girls: A Resource Manual for Girls’ Sports in Urban Centers. Educational materials include: GoGirlGo! Kit: For girls age 8-18, athletes address hot to deal with certain health-risk behaviors; Women's Sports Experience, Foundation quarterly newsletter, and SportTalk, quarterly sports newsletter for girls; It Takes a Team! Making Sport Safe for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Athletes and Coaches: an education kit for athletes, coaches, and athletic directors, including curriculum, video, posters, and safe space stickers. Research Studies include: Women’s Sports Foundation Report: Title IX and Race in Intercollegiate Sports (2003); The Women’s Sports Foundation Report: Addressing the Needs of Professional and Amateur Athletes (1999); The Women’s Sports Foundation Report: Sport and Teen Pregnancy (1998); The Women’s Sports Foundation Report on Title IX, Athletics & the Office of Civil Rights (1997); and The Women’s Sports Foundation Gender Equity Report Card (1997).
