Abstract

The National Kidney Foundation (NKF) and its 51 affiliates promote the prevention, treatment, and cure of kidney and urinary tract diseases. The NKF sponsors programs in organ donation, research, professional education, public education, and patient and community services. Professional education programs include symposia, meetings, and conferences. Both the transplant programs and donor family programs promote organ donation; one works with transplant recipients of all organs and the other with families who have consented to donate the organ of a family member who died. Patient and community services are sponsored by NKF and its affiliates and include health screening, blood and drug banks, an information and referral program, counseling, transportation, and camp programs, depending on the needs and capabilities of individual affiliates. NKF also promotes legislation benefiting kidney patients.

Publications

The NKF publishes pamphlets on kidney and urologic diseases, and treatments, including acute glomerulonephritis, polycystic kidney disease, urinary tract obstructions, nephrosis, end-stage renal disease, organ donation, diabetes, and high blood pressure. Serial publications: American Journal of Kidney Diseases; CNSW Newsletter; Advances in Renal Replacement Therapy; Journal on Renal Nutrition; Journal of Nephrology Social Work; Family Focus; Transplant Chronicles; For Those Who Give & Grieve; CRN News & Briefs, Renalink and many patient-oriented publications.
