The United Ostomy Association (UOA) was formed in 1962 to help ostomy patients return to normal living through mutual aid and moral support, education in proper ostomy care and management, exchange of ideas, assistance in improving ostomy equipment and supplies, advancement of knowledge of gastrointestinal diseases, cooperation with other organizations having common purposes, exhibits at medical and public meetings, and public education about ostomy. Local chapters have medical advisory boards consisting of medical-professional personnel trained in ostomy care and use of equipment. Trained members often visit ostomy patients in hospitals and in their homes to offer moral support and assistance. Monthly meetings provide information on adjusting to living with an ostomy.
Publications
UOA publishes a variety of booklets discussing the care and management, anatomy, and sexual aspects of living with ostomies. Slide programs are also available. Serial publication: Ostomy Quarterly (journal)--articles on living with ostomies, organizational news, and advertisements by the manufacturers and distributors of ostomy equipment and supplies.
