Following is the text of the October 4 statement by Department of State Deputy Spokesman Philip Reeker on trilateral consultations in Washington, D.C., October 7, between the United States, the Republic of Korea, and Japan:

U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE
Office of the Spokesman

October 4, 2000

STATEMENT BY PHILIP T. REEKER, DEPUTY SPOKESMAN

U.S., REPUBLIC OF KOREA, JAPAN TO MEET OCTOBER 7

Delegations representing the United States, the Republic of Korea, and Japan will meet for trilateral consultations in Washington, D.C., October 7, 2000. Delegations of the three countries -- led respectively by Ambassador Wendy R. Sherman, Counselor of the State Department and U.S. North Korea Policy Coordinator; Jang Jai-ryong, Republic of Korea Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs; and Yukio Takeuchi, Japanese Deputy Vice Minister for Foreign Policy -- will discuss a range of issues in our ongoing coordination of policy toward the DPRK.

The October trilateral meeting is part of a continuing process of close and cooperative consultations among the three countries, formalized in Hawaii in April, 1999, as the Trilateral Coordination and Oversight Group.
